Palm Plate Review

Happy Memorial Day weekend everybody!

Marx Foods sent me these cool palm plates to try out and review. I was instantly intrigued because they just sound really unique and fun.

The plates are made from the leaves of the Adaka palm tree. As they grow, they discard their old leaves, and these are what are gathered and used to make the plates. There is no harvesting or cutting down of trees, just collecting discarded leaves. Then, they are cleaned and molded with a heat press. They are disposable and eco-friendly.

When I got them, the first thing I did was take one out to the palm tree in our yard so they felt "at home."

They are really quite pretty. The bottoms were darker and you could tell they were made of a leaf. The serving side was a lot lighter, without as many ridges.

They're really thick and sturdy. The folks at Marx Foods did a weight test on them and the plate held 13 pounds before it snapped and broke. You definitely can't do that with your usual paper or plastic disposable plate!

I took one of the hexagon plates to work with me. I started my usual summer job at the ice cream shop and thought it'd be the perfect place to test a disposable plate. I love that all of the plates had high lips, so you could actually use it almost like a bowl. This held a serving of rainbow sherbet like a champ with no leaking. The bottom didn't even feel that cold! When I was done, I washed the plate under warm water with a soapy scrub brush and let it air dry to be used again. They are disposable, but they're such good quality that you can get multiple uses out of them.

We have some company visiting for the holiday weekend, so the small rectangle plates took a trip with us to our housing development's beach area for a picnic lunch.

Again, the high lip on the plate came in handy, because it kept sand away from our food. The rigid plates held their own on damp sand and weren't overturned by light breezes.

When we were done with our lunch, we sent this little toy out for a float.

We joked he had a "burial at sea." But, in all seriousness, the plates even held the weight of multiple beach and sand toys and stayed afloat and sturdy. The girls had such a blast using them as boats. Who would think that you could take your disposable plates from eating lunch and then turn them into a fun beach toy?

We played at the beach for about 3 hours and the plates held up the whole time. After being in the water they did start to warp a bit, but we just packed them up with their beach toys and as they dried they became rigid and sturdy again. We won't reuse these to eat on, but it's crazy to think that they have the ability for continued use after such a full afternoon!

The pros:
Ridiculously sturdy - you feel confident using these for any type of food, hot or cold.
Great looking - a nice, natural beauty.
Eco-friendly - no trees harmed in the making!
Disposable - you don't have to worry about breaking them, losing them, or giving them away.

The cons:
They came loose in a box, without packaging, which I was kind of skeeved about.
A slight ammonia/woodsy smell when first received, but that dissipated as aired out.
Price - these are not cheap! They come in a variety of sizes and shapes and all are over $1 per plate.

Personally, I would not use these for everyday, casual eating because of the price.

I think they would work well for a beach wedding, a family reunion, themed parties, or for giving baked goods in. Something I'm definitely going to keep them in mind for is camping- where you could rinse and reuse them the whole camping trip, discarding them at the end.

They're a really pretty product that I'm glad to have had the chance to learn about and review first hand. They're a step above paper and plastic plates, but without all the negative, disposable factors. These can even be composted when done, instead of ending up in a landfill.

Disclaimer: I received a few, assorted plate sizes complimentary from Marx Foods to use and review. The opinions are my own, honest thoughts about the product.

POM deceptive marketing

I was scrolling through articles on my news app last night, while Johnny snored happily beside me when this headline caught my attention:

"Judge rules: POM deceptively marketed pomegranate juice"

Hmmm.. I had a moment of hesitation, because this is a company that has sent ME products. Products that I received with packets of information to pass along to my readers.

Curious, I clicked on the article and realized that I had unknowingly used Dinner at Christina's to spread these false health claims.

Here are a few news articles for further reading:

Judge: POM deceptively marketed pomegranate juice

POM Wonderful's Deception Is The Tip Of The Iceberg

Judge Says Pom Wonderful’s Advertising Is Misleading

FTC Calls POM Wonderful Claims Deceptive

So, what does this mean? Well, personally, I think it means that they got carried away in advertising unsupported benefits they think pomegranate juice has.

It's still a fruit. It's still whole food. It's still 100% juice, with no added sugars or artificial crap. It can't be bad, but it's just not as good as they've advertised.

Truthfully, I haven't had anything pomegranate related in about two years. I opted out of receiving further complimentary products, and I no longer purchase or order anything that lists pomegranate as a main ingredient.

Why?

Well, pomegranate (along with some other foods, such as maca and Brazil nuts) have been known to affect moods. Having experienced a life time of anxiety and depression issues, I found that drinking pomegranate juice, or eating foods with it as a main ingredient make me.. hmm, how shall I put this?

Batshit crazy.

No, really. Johnny was the one that noticed it and pointed it out (brave man). Every time when we looked back, I had had pomegranate juice, or a pomegranate related food within the past 24 hours.

So, basically what I'm saying is:

Dinner at Christina's featured a product and repeated information about that product that has now been shown to be unsupported. I apologize for that and will edit the original post to make sure and include this updated information.

Disclaimer: I'm posting this on my own. Nobody told me to. I want to keep all my product reviews and opinions of products up to date and honest!

Rev-a-Shelf cabinet organizers

I've been seeing a lot of kitchen and shelf organizers on Pinterest and knew I wanted to start this kitchen off right. After doing some research, I found that most units were made by Rev-a-Shelf and they were in the $250 range. Not wanting to pay that price, but insisting I have some kind of organization, I tracked them down to a few other online retailers, the cheapest being Lowes. At $130 each, these were a bit of an investment, but one I was happy to make, and will pay off in the long run.

Most of our bottom cabinets were really, really deep, which made getting things in and out pretty difficult. Also, the only shelf was a little 10" guy way in the back. Not the most practical, and didn't allow for great use of space. We'll call this the "before" picture.

Enter: 1 handy husband. Oh, and some tools. Can't forget the tools.

The first cabinet tackled was one in the island. I thought it'd be perfect for baking items, since I'd likely spread everything out on the island and make a big mess, there.

This one required re-routing of an outlet box for the wine fridge, but I'm happy with the final results! Both wire racks slide out and allow for full reach of items. Johnny was able to position the top rack tall enough that the bottom, tall items (like jugs of oil and vinegar) even fit!

The next shelf required Johnny to remove the center divider. He's going to attach it to one of the cabinet doors, so that one will close first and you'll never know the difference!

This one is probably my favorite, because it easily holds all of our pots, pans, and their lids. No stacking, or loud clanking around the find the one you need.

The bottom slides out and has dividers that adjust to hold each pot in place. I especially like this feature, because it makes it easy to see all the sizes, grab the one you need, and place them back neatly after washing.

The top has tilted hooks that allow each lid to sit at an angle, so they aren't too tall and still allow the unit to close easily.

Rev-a-shelf makes a gazillion and one other organizing pieces for the kitchen and bathroom that I might want down the road. But for now, these two were the most important for our kitchen organization. It allows me to make the best use out of the two cabinets that receive the most use and need to fit a lot of items.

The units are really high quality metal, and the engineering of how they fit together and are supported in the cabinet is impressive. Little details like the dividers and ball bearing glides let you know these are quality pieces, worth the investment.

(Even though this is a product review and endorsement, it's based solely on my personal opinion and experience with the product, which I bought with my own money. Rev-a-Shelf or Lowes has no clue who I am, or that I bought their products.)

Checking In and a Giveaway

I've been lurking behind the scenes for awhile, checking in on a few of you guys. I know that Hannah just had her 20th birthday party, Laura continues to be the Queen of All, thrifting, and cooking away with beautiful views and crazy pets, and Ally is my Pinterest hero - making and creating all kinds of amazing!

I'm plotting and planning my return to food blogging. I have recipes pinned, blogs bookmarked, and an obscene amount of cookbooks scored during my hiatus. I never intended on the crazy turns our lives have taken in these past few months to impact my blog the way it did. Even though I haven't blogged much in these months, it still is very much a part of who I am and an outlet I crave. Stay tuned, I'm excited to show you what's ahead for us in our new married life!

Speaking of wedding, I'm still working on sorting through over 2,000 images provided to us by our photographer. My mom has chosen the photos for their parent photo album, and I made a few small albums for relatives and family friends, but that is about it.

Until I was given the opportunity to review My Memories Suite Scrapbook software. I was so happy to have this resource to be able to do something fun, creative, and lasting with our wedding photos.

I was nervous at first, because it required a download and I thought it'd be hard. I'm not the most computer savvy, I usually call on Johnny for anything beyond the usual e-mail writing and web surfing kind of jobs. When I open Photoshop and see all the buttons and tools I panic and get overwhelmed. I thought this scrapbook software would be the same, but it wasn't.

The buttons are clearly labeled and very easy to use. You can choose a template and it loads itself from there. It's very intuitive and guides you through each step. Helpful bubbles pop up with prompts and tips every now and then.

I also really like that there are unique things to add to pages, such as editing and playing with text, photo embellishments and effects, even calendars!

The few books I'd made were on a web site with free software and it did not have any of these options, you couldn't even change the font. I really liked the ability to personalize and spend time making My Memories Suite book unique and personal to us and our wedding.

I did find it difficult to add one photo at a time, but perhaps as I learn the software more I'll learn a shortcut or easier way to do this. The thumbnails to choose from were small, even for these spry 27 year old eyes.

There were also moments where it ran kind of jerky, but I think that's more a reflection on my computer's ability than the software.

It seems to be the type of thing you could lose yourself in for hours, making your creation "perfect," so plan accordingly!

Nut Butters and popchips Giveaway!

A couple of weeks ago we got a catalog at the ice cream shop for a bunch of new products. Something that caught my eye were a line of specialty nut butters. I asked my boss if we could try them, so he called up for some samples.

I tore into the box like a mad woman. I was a leetle excited when they came. This resulted in an injury. (Sad face)

There were 6 little 2 oz. samples.

A chocolate hazelnut one, which my boss used right away to make a milkshake. YUM.

Plain hazelnut, which I love and think would work well on a sundae.

Dry roasted pistachio and cashew nut butter which are pretty dry and hard to spread.

The cinnamon pecan is a nice touch- very good on toast.

And last -- the cherry almond. Absolutely disgusting. DISGUSTING. Tastes exactly like almond butter mixed with cherry cough syrup. So, so nasty. I washed my mouth out in the kitchen sink after. haha

Ok, who wants some popchips!!!??? I have three free coupons that expire the end of October.

Leave a comment below letting me know if they're available in your area and I'll pick somebody at random Friday, August 12th.

Various Reviews

Sometimes Blogger uploads my pictures sideways for no reason. Even J, the web developer/programmer, can't figure it out. I usually fiddle around and re-save them to fix it, but for now, since I'm posting from a random computer and don't have much time, I'm leaving them sideways. Sorry!

I got these Magnum ice cream bars with a coupon from Foodbuzz. They come in a 3 pack box, and are usually in the $4-5 range, but these were on sale for $3 at my local store. All of the flavors had whey (boo) so J couldn't test them, and I went with my choice since I'd most likely be the only one eating them. (My dad's not big on dairy.)

It was pretty good. The milk chocolate was my least favorite part, I think I would have preferred dark chocolate. I liked the crunchy of the almonds and the ice cream was amazingly delicious and creamy (maybe the whey?). Honestly, unless I had the coupon I probably wouldn't buy them. $1+ for a lone bar is way out of this cheap frugal girl's budget.

I won Ally's AMAZING giveaway a few weeks ago. I literally screamed and called J over. This is, hands down, the awesomest giveaway I've won! I got 4 of these little cookbooks, an (unpictured) grocery bag, and 52 coupons (1 year's worth) for FREE Organic Valley products. Our store carries their milks and butter, but I'm hoping NC will have a wider variety of their products. It'll still be cool to not have to buy milk for a whole year! Thanks again, Ally!!!

I saw a commercial for these and wanted to try them. I'm not usually a cookie person, but something about these caught my interest. I had a coupon from the Sunday paper, so I got them.

Wow, they're good. The peanut butter ones were my #1 choice and are reminiscent of Girl Scout's Tagalongs. Dangerous, but oh so delicious.

I received a coupon through Foodbuzz's Tastemaker program and Magnum ice cream to purchase the bars. The photos and opinions are my own.

Video Demonstration: Sausage Stuffed Peppers

I was surprised to find a huge box on my door step Friday! Inside were three bottles of Newman's Own salad dressings, three jars of Newman's Own sauce, a flip HD camera, two coupons for Newman's Own frozen pizza, and instructions to make a short video.

The video instructions were simple enough:
  • demonstrate a meal that could be cooked in 30 minutes or less
  • showcase at least one Newman's Own product

I could do that! And I already had just the recipe in mind:

Sausage Stuffed Peppers

4 bell peppers
1 onion
1 lb. sausage
1 handful mozzarella cheese
1 jar Newman's Own sauce

Put a large pot of water on the stove to boil. Wash and cut the peppers in half lengthwise, removing the seeds and membrane. Chop the onion. Carefully put the 8 pepper halves in the boiling water, return to a boil. Place the onion and the sausage in a high sided skillet and cook over medium heat until the sausage is no longer pink. Turn off both burners. Stir in a big handful of cheese with the sausage and onions. Turn the oven on to 350°. Drain the peppers and place in a large baking dish. Spoon equal amounts of the sausage mixture into each pepper. Top with about 1/4 cup of Newman's Own sauce. Cover baking dish with foil and place in the oven for about 10 minutes. Serve immediately and enjoy!

The Newman's Own products and flip HD camera were received complimentary as part of a video demo promotion through Newman's Own and FoodBuzz. The recipe and opinions are my own.

Amazing Grass - 1 Year Later

It has been about one full year since I started using Amazing Grass.

I wanted to re-visit this subject and let you guys know how it's been going.

I have used Amazing Grass every single day, except a few days here or there when I forgot, or when I left the tub behind in travels (sad). In total, I'd say in the whole year there were only about 10 days I did not use Amazing Grass.

The benefits have been life-changing for me.

Headaches - completely gone. I've had maybe 5 in the past year. This is huge for somebody that used to get them once or twice a week and have to call out of work when they got bad enough to make me nauseous and cause blurred vision.

Nails - healthy, strong, and fast growing. I have to cut my fingernails every week and my toenails every other week. They are thick and never crack or break.

Hair - healthy, strong, and fast growing, too! In late September I cut my hair to have bangs. It's now early February and the bangs are long enough to put up in my ponytail. That is inches of growth in less than six months.

Acne - I still have small breakouts here and there, mostly around my period. My regular acne and smaller breakouts on my chest and back have disappeared. I used to get large, painful cyst-like pimples on my face and I cannot remember the last time I had one.

Digestive system - before I started Amazing Grass I used to go poo only about two or three times a week. I thought this was normal for me. Since starting Amazing Grass I now go every single day. I believe this regular elimination reduces build-up and toxins in my system which contributed to the headaches and the acne.

Instead of the smoothies, I now mix my Amazing Grass with a small glass of orange juice every morning. I find when mixed with orange juice, the gritty texture of the powder disappears completely.

I purchase my Amazing Grass through Amazon on a subscription basis. The 17 oz. (60 serving) Berry Flavor tub ends up costing about $32, which is far less than I've seen it anywhere else. You can pause or edit your subscription preferences at any time and keep the same cost, too.

This is not a compensated review. These are my personal opinions and experiences with a product I purchase and use on my own accord.

Holiday Baking Giveaway

The folks at Betty Crocker, Glad, and Safeway stores have teamed up with My Blog Spark for a "Bake your Holidays Merry" giveaway. They're hoping to revive the holiday tradition of baking and giving cookies.

The package includes:

- a 3-pack of Glad reusable containers
- a package of Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix
- a $25 Safeway card (also valid at Dominick's, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Vons, and Genuardi's)

I used my sugar cookie package to whip up the thumbprint cookies pictured on the back. I'm going to pack them in a Gladware and send them to my brother for Christmas! I think he might like these a bit more than the sweet potato bread I'm gifting everybody else!

I also have another prize pack to give to a Dinner at Christina's reader! There are three ways to enter (each worth one entry):

- Visit BakeSweetMemories.com and leave a comment telling me which recipe you would like to try. (worth 1 entry, mandatory)

- Tweet the giveaway, mentioning @DinneratXtinas (worth 1 entry, leave an additional comment)

- Share a "first" with Friday Firsts this Friday. (worth 1 entry, leave an additional comment)

Giveaway will end Sunday, Dec. 19th. Winner will be announced Monday, Dec. 20th.

This prize pack and the one to be rewarded were received compliments of MyBlogSpark, Gladware, Betty Crocker, and Safeway stores. Any opinions of the products are my own.

10 Pounds of Angus Burgers

I won Christo's caption contest a few weeks ago from Marx Foods.

Justin was kind enough to let me wait until after Thanksgiving for their delivery. I needed to clear some freezer space.

A fully insulated, well-packed box landed on my doorstep. Inside were 20 beautifully crafted burgers. 18 of them went into the freezer, 2 of them were defrosted for dinner that night.

I cooked them medium rare in a pre-heated dry skillet over medium high heat with just a sprinkling of salt and pepper.

The last minute or two I put on a slice of cheddar to melt.

"Amazing" doesn't do these burgers justice.

Johnny verified with me three separate times that he was just eating meat sprinkled with salt and pepper. He could not get over how much flavor was packed in these, he was convinced I had marinated them or something.

Thanks again Christo and Justin!

Grilled Cheeseburger Chili

Marx Foods sent me a sampler package of 6 of their dried chiles. Upon opening the envelope, my nose caught wind of one particular chile and I couldn't get it out of my mind.

The chipotle - a smoked jalepeno. That spicy smokey aroma worked its way into my thoughts and imagination until I conconcted this dish to suit it.

See - when I smell something smoky I think of the grill. And when I think of the grill I think of juicy hamburgers, smothered in cheese and bacon. The last part - use of a spoon - seemed a no brainer at that point: Turn a burger into a chili!

9 dried chipotles, stemmed and seeded
1 cup hot water
1 lb. hamburger meat
2 small onions, diced fine
3 cloves garlic, minced
6 oz. can tomato paste
28 oz. can tomato puree
1 Tbsp Kosher salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
6 slices cheddar cheese
6 slices cooked bacon

Begin by stemming and seeding the chipotles. Toast them until aromatic in a heavy bottomed pot. Then, soak the chiles in a cup of hot water for about 15 minutes. Blend the chiles and water into a smooth paste. Pass through a sieve, using a spoon to press down. The results will be a chile sauce, which we will use to season the chili.

In the same heavy bottomed pot used to brown the chiles, brown the hamburger meat. Drain if necessary. Add the tomato paste, onions, and garlic, simmering over medium heat until the vegetables are tender. Next add the tomato puree, seasonings, and the chile sauce. Start small and add more sauce based on your personal heat preference. I added about 1/4 cup for a medium spice level.

Spoon into an oven safe bowl and add a slice of cheddar cheese, just as if you were topping a burger. Place into a warmed oven for a few minutes until the cheese melts. Garnish with bacon slices. Serves 6.

The chiles featured in this post were received complimentary from Marx Foods for participation in their recipe challenge. The photos, opinions, and recipe are my own.
